Episode 12 Malec

From heartbreak to love wins and everything in between. This episode has everything. Alec and Clary make up. Alec and Jace make up. Clary and Jace are not speaking. Magnus gives up, briefly. Alec continues to believe he is doing the right thing, until he doesn’t. Malec officially becomes canon and the Queer Community gets the representation we never had but always deserved. Alec faces reality.

I love this moment of peace between Alec and Clary. Her bringing the cup back and helping save Izzy has really helped on Alec’s return path from the dark side. It has really started to change his perspective. Who would have thought that Clary would play such a role in Alec’s redemption arc.

Interesting that he’s still pissed at Jace, tho. In a lot of ways, there is so much more trauma there then there ever was between Alec and Clary. I think it is the fact that Alec feels that Jace didn’t have enough faith in Alec as a leader and that’s why Jace refused to listen or do things Alec’s way.

This Malec scene is so intense and beautiful and devastating. You can see exactly how Alec feels and how hard he is trying to fight it. It is crushing.

All those emotions that Magnus describes are extraordinary. And exactly what happens to them when they are close to each other. I may not have ever experienced these things, or desire to, But I absolutely want my favorite characters to have that.

“Emotions are never black and white. They’re more like symptoms. You lose your breath every time they enter a room.”

“Your heart beats faster when they walk by.”

“Your skin tingles when they stand close enough to feel their breath. I know you feel what I feel, Alec.”

YEAH HE DOES, MAGNUS!!

“Besides, you don’t want to tarnish your family’s perfectly crafted image, do you?”

Listen! Much respect to Magnus for him wanting to avoid Alec. But even more respect for the petty snark when they do come face to face. You deserved that, Alec. And, Magnus, try all you want, but I see that pain you’re trying to hide, my love.

My heart does break for Jace. I know he is struggling with the whole ‘sibling’ thing. But I do think this is good for him. He is focused, again. But he is being too hard on Clary. She’s suffering, too. He shouldn’t be treating her like it’s her fault.

I really like Ragnor. And I really like his interactions with Magnus. I wish we had gotten more of him. And of their friendship.

This scene is hilarious. The way Ragnor appears to talk to himself, confusing poor Clary. Only to reveal he was talking to a glamoured Magnus and Jace the whole time. I love it.

As if Magnus isn’t hurting enough over Alec’s rejection and his impending wedding, they take away his oldest friend!

As cold as it sounds, Lydia makes excellent points. Not all of us are ruled by emotions or the concept of love.

“They’re really about best friends and how they’re always going to be best friends. Even if one of them gets married.”

Excellent advice on bachelor parties, my sweet Simon. Very wise.

Magnus seeing Ragnor, while going through Ragnor’s stuff, is so touching and heartbreaking.

“You let her break your heart, my friend. You’re immortal. She killed you.”

Ragnor’s view on what Camille did to Magnus is very interesting.

Izzy, you’re a genius. This is the perfect bachelor party for Alec. And his and Jace’s confessions about Clary and Magnus and each other are heartbreaking. My poor heart.

Jace - But I only ever did what I thought was right. But I never wanted to hurt you. I’m sorry.

Alec - I know. You know, we just got caught up in all this drama.

Jace - Yeah. I mean, you’re re getting married tomorrow.

Alec - And Clary’s your sister. You know, what’s up with that?

Jace - Don’t even get me started. I kissed her. What’s worse, I wanted her. I was falling in love. I must be sick or something. I don’t know.

Honestly, I just want to jump through the tv and hug them both.

But Alec and his soliloquy absolutely destroys me - heart and soul - every time.

“No. You’re not… you’re not sick. Situations just… it’s confusing. Trust me, I know. You know, it’s like you have this plan for your life. And you know what you need to do, what your responsibilities are. And, you think, if you follow the rules, everything’s going to be fine. And then somebody comes along and pushes you off that path. You just…”

But it’s Jace last piece of advice that really hits home.

“I mean, you still have to be true to yourself.”

“Though I know you won’t believe me, someday someone will come along who will tear down those walls you’ve built around your heart. When that love comes back to you, you must do everything in your power to fight for it.”

Magnus! I need you to listen to Ragnor, very carefully. Then do exactly what he says.

Listen! Magnus crashing this wedding is one of the best scenes in television history. The way he stops and looks at Alec. How he calmly stands there waiting for Alec to choose him — because we all know Alec is going to! The way he puts Maryse in her place by telling her ‘This is between me and your son. I’ll leave if he asks me to.”

The way Alec freezes as soon as he sees Magnus. The way we just know that he is experiencing everything Magnus talked about earlier. How he apologizes to Lydia before leaving her at the altar. The way he tells Maryse '“Enough!” as he strides down the aisle toward Magnus.

Then THE KISS!!

The moment that everything changed for the LGBTQIA+ Community and the way we are represented in media. The official birth of a couple that would spend the next 2 years setting a precedent for the Community and how we should be treated and represented. And the birth of a fandom that still thrives even 7 years after the show has ended.

Not only did Harry and Matt give us one of the most perfect scenes, ever. They made us seen. They made us important. They made us matter. And they paved the road for what LGBTQIA+ should be in TV and movies.

Simon’s enthusiasm and his The Graduate analogy is so fucking adorable. He’s so animated when he is comparing Magnus and Alec to Ben and Elaine. And I love every second of it.

Magnus and Alec’s confusion while they try to understand what Simon is saying is hilarious. Just those looks on their faces is enough to send me giggling. Then Alec tops it off with ‘Who invited the vampire.”

How adorable is Alec as he paces around Magnus, all nervous. Yet, you can also see how relieved and happy he is to finally have the truth of himself out there, now.

Every Queer person’s nightmare is being rejected by our loved ones when we come out. And too many of us are.

But Alec doesn’t take it from his mother. His “I’m the same person I’ve always been. Now everything’s just out in the open.” are words we all would love to say to those that rejected us. Matt’s portrayal of this moment is extraordinary. With these words, he gave Alec the power to stand for all of us.

Magnus - You know what I just realized? We still haven’t gone on our first date, yet.

Alec - Yeah. You’re right. Wanna, I don’t know, get a drink sometime?

Magnus - I would love that.

Alec - Great.

The most perfect and adorable way to end this most important and groundbreaking episode.

And, with that, we only have one more episode of season 1 to go. See you next time for Morning Star
