Episode 6 Girls

With this episode, Heartstopper is no longer just Nick and Charlie’s story.

Girls - Coming out is hard for us, too.

I love this mother/son relationship. And I love that they have this time together. It makes me almost miss my sons being young and having movie and game nights with them. Almost…

I think that Nick is determined to learn about himself for many reasons. Not the least of which is to understand feelings he has been suppressing since childhood. Which we hear about in season 2.

And, of course, because he wants to understand and become more comfortable so he can feel ready to come out because he hates having to ask Charlie to keep them a secret. Nick carries a lot of guilt about that.

Tara’s struggle with trying to adapt to the new way that her schoolmates are now viewing her is way too real. One of the reasons us Queer people hesitate to come out is because of exactly what happens to Tara here.

After what Charlie went through with Ben, he could have been far less patient with Nick. But that’s not Charlie. He is a wonderful kid. And he cares enough about Nick to not want him to go through what Charlie went through the previous year.

Nick really needed someone else that he could talk to about what he is going through, besides Charlie. Not that talking to Charlie is bad, but Charlie is also a bit biased because of how he feels about Nick. Tara and Darcy will keep it real.

And they do.

I love how they never run out of things to say to each other. I love how they can laugh and joke with each other. But also have the hard conversations and cry.

They have truly found their place in this world - with each other. I just hate that Isaac gets left out of this conversation and the milkshake/concert ‘date.’

If there is another character, after Isaac, that I identify with - it is definitely Darcy.

It is so unfair that we have to come out, at all. Even more unfair that - if and when we do - we run the very real risk of losing family and friends and even status. It’s hard enough as an adult, pure torture for a teenager.

Only 2 more episodes of Season 1 left.
